We at TIU own all our hostels/campsites, we all live in Ukraine because we love it here and are very happy to share with everybody who comes to stay with us our experiences. Our hostel in Chernivtsi was purchased with the idea of being a good hostel that we would like to stay in ourselves this is why everything is so at hand and relaxed. We don't go to our separate homes at night; we don't have a private room! We are sleeping in a bunk in the hostel you are staying at!

Chernivtsi is a beautiful city located in western Ukraine close to the Romanian and Moldovan borders. Steeped in history, the city is known for its prestigious university and the large market. Once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The architecture is very much Austrian influenced. It is a perfect place to explore the parts of western Ukraine not usually visited by foreign tourists.

We are the first hostel in Chernivtsi and strive the give our guests an interesting stay away from the expensive tourist cities like Lviv and Odessa. During the summer months we take guests camping to more remote mountain villages!

Directions from Chernivtsi railway station:
Walk out of the railway station cross over the road and turn left up the hill. Walk for about 2 minuets and when you see the TANK take the right fork. Walk for 1 minuet and you will see a crossroads go straight ahead walk for 1 minuet and you will see a big yellow church. Take the right turn at the church and we are the first court yard entrance that you will see. Walk into the court yard and you will see a brown door with 4 bells press number 4. When you have been buzzed in please walk up the stairs and along the balcony that doesn?t have windows.

If you are stood on the side of the church please cross over and look at the courtyard entrance.

If you go past the church you have gone too far! Please walk back a bit

If you are in a court yard that doesn?t have a big tree in the centre of it, you are in the wrong place!

Directions from Chernivtsi bus station:
With your back to the bus station turn right and proceed along the main road continue along this road and you will walk past the football stadium and Main Park. Do not turn off this road! Follow the road and you will pass a large white church on your Right hand side. Continue along the road and you will start to go down hill. Halfway down the hill is a crossroads take the left turning and the Blue town hall should be to your left continue along this road until you arrive at the junction with the large white cinema on your right hand side. Take the right hand turning at the cinema and proceed downhill until you see a large yellow church, Stop and with your back to the church look at the first courtyard entrance on the street! Then follow the same instructions as arriving by train, you only need to turn 4 times from the bus station to our entrance Right Left Right Left. Or alternatively get in a taxi at the bus station ask for Plosha Philamoni and show the driver the address, it should cost between 10 and 20h.

- from the main building of the train station walk straight down Kominternu street, then take the second street on the left called Saksahans'koho street, walk till you see hotel 'Lybid'
- After you pass hotel 'Lybid' on your left you will see a huge shopping mall called 'Ukraina'. Continue walking straight ahead, pass the mall you will see a block of flats (hostel is in this block of flats) after this block ends walk on the left to the backside of it to the furthest left green door.
- There you will find small sign 'Kiev Backpackers'. We are on the third floor.
- hostel is on this street beside the shopping mall. Look for prospect Peremohy 1, apt. 10.
- Hostel is in the same building as the restaurant called 'Chaikoff' (??????). Go to the back of the house and look for sign Kiev backpackers'.

Alternatively:
- you can take a minibus (called marshrutka) #558 or #181 (price 2 UAH) and get off near shopping mall 'Ukraina' (3 min drive), cross the street and the hostel is on the right from the shopping mall. Go to the back of the house.

Have a break with a bit of fresh air and violence. Divide into 2 teams and run around tagging each other in 5 acres of army land. The paintball game and transport normally takes 2 hours. You will get everything you need to repaint your best mate! You need about 50 balls/hour and anyone training to be in the SAS can buy more balls.

Ukrainian Visas for Australians and New Zealanders

Accept for citizens of Australia and New Zealand no one from Europe; USA, Canada and other country's need visa. . But don't be put off. Getting a visa is now is easy and can be done in a day.

If you are in Krakow, for example, you only have to go to the Consulate on Krakowska Street in Kazimierz (Monday, Wednesday, Friday between 9 -12), fill out an application, leave your passport, then go to the nearest bank to pay in the money. Later that day go back to the Consulate with proof of payment and you're done. If you want it done same day it costs a bit more, otherwise you wait a few days and pay less...... That?s it, see you in Lviv.

This luxury apartment with elegant and spacious rooms has great views, and has been recently renovated to western standards. The apartment is located in the city centre, across from City Hall (Ratusha) in the old part of the city, which is protected by UNESCO. Restaurants and all the attractions, such as Opera Theatre, Rynok Square, Roman Catholic Cathedral, National and History museums and more are all nearby.
The apartment consists of one big room with a double bed and pull-out sofa, cable TV, and an antique fireplace which provides a romantic atmosphere in the winter. International Youth Hostel 'Balaclava Backpackers' is open all year, 24 hours every day. Check in/check out time is 12.00 noon.
The hostel, which forms part of a substantial two-storey building, has a total of 80 beds, 9 toilets and 9 showers. Bedrooms vary in size, the smallest containing 2 beds, the largest 7 bedded dormitories. Hot water is available at certain times of day (information about times is posted within the hostel) and at other times by arrangement.
There is a common room with a TV and a piano, a little cafe, a secluded central courtyard, and enough space for some ball games. There is ample free parking nearby, and cars can be free parked in the hostel grounds. Please note that, as yet, there is no hostel kitchen.

How to get to Balaclava

By Car. Balaclava is about 5 km south of the main road between Yalta and Sebastopol', about 12 km southeast of Sebastopol'. From Simferopol' Airport. Best to arrange airport pick-up with us. Taxis are also possible. From Simferopol' Railway Station. There are numerous taxis: haggle. Alternatively, start by taking the trolleybus to Yalta, itself an unforgettable ride... From Yalta. Find the bus station and take a Sebastopol' bus, asking to be set down at the Balaclava turn-off (it's then a 5 km hike down into the town), or take a taxi (again, haggle). From Sebastopol'. Find the bus or railway station. Take a no. 17 or 20 trolleybus or a no. 25 or 26 minibus (bush taxi / collectivo, usually called a "topic" in Sevastopol or a "marshrutka" in the rest of Ukraine). Ask to be set down at the stop known as "5th kilometer on the Balaclava road" (in Russian: ["pjaty kilometr Balaklavskogo shosse"]). From that stop take the no. 98 bus to the stop known as "Warszawa" shop (in Russian: ["Magazin Warszawa"]) which is in the Kadykovka District of Balaclava. Alternatively take the no. 9 minibus (it runs every 10 minutes) and ask to be set down at the stop known as Kadykovka, which is near a railway crossing. From there it's about 10 minutes walk along Shelkovichnaya Street until you get to the "Warszawa" shop. Drapushko Street runs westwards from that store. The hostel is about 100 m from the store, on the left-hand side.

How to find Balaclava Backpackers from the centre of town

Look at the map. If you just arrived in Balaclava, you'll probably find yourself dropped in the centre of the old town, where the bus terminus near the waterfront is easily identifiable - it's where all the minibuses stop. Start walking northwards, away from the waterfront, with the walls of the old naval base on the west side of the road. When the road forks, with a park and a lurid purple building inside the fork take the left (western fork), and keep walking, over a level crossing with the railway, past the town hall, and immediately after the second level crossing turn left (west). On the map below, its the more northern place where the railway crosses the yellow road. Keep going, with the railway on your left, until the road swings round and crosses the railway line, then zig-zags. The "Warszawa" shop should then be visible. Drapushko Street runs westwards from that store. The hostel is about 100 m from the store, on the left-hand side. If you decide to walk, you should expect to take about 25 minutes. It's much easier to take a taxi which will cost about 20 Ukrainian hryvnas (4 US dollars).
