The Baikalhostel, result of a German-Russian partnership, is the first backpacker hostel in Irkutsk. The hostel opened in March 2003 in a cosy apartment close to the city centre and the Angara River.

Our friendly staff will always be on hand to provide you with any information required or to help organize transport to Lake Baikal, Olchon and Sajan Mountains.

The rooms are clean and comfortable with 2 or 5 beds, with shared bathroom and toilet facilities.

There is a well equiped kitchen for self-caterers, free linen and blankets and free luggage storage. It's also possible to rent Kamik Icers (a special sole with spikes for shoes), climbing equipment, an ax, an saw (Drushba) and so on.

The Hostel is situated between the railway station and the dam at the River Angara. From train station take minibus 72, number 12 doesn't exist any more. Get off at the bus and Marshrutka station Mikrochirurgia glaza, on the main street ulitza Lermontova. From there it's a 1-minute walk to the Hostel. The apartment is located on a new red brick five floor building near the stop. Look for the advertisement of the shop called "Tpouka". The Hostel is just behind the corner. The bell is outside.

The location of the hostel is unbeatably central and ultimately convenient. You can walk everywhere you need within minutes: ATM (3 min), pizza or restaurant (5 ? 15 min), Art Museum and supermarket (15 min), Angara river (15 min)

Please keep in mind that all trains in Russia run on Moscow time (Irkutsk time = Moscow time + 5hr). So if you train ticket says: arrival time is 3 am that in fact means 8am local time.

A) 30 min walk over the bridge, continue along the Stepan Razin street, follow the tram tracks. The building is almost on the corner of Lenin and Gorky streets.

B) Take a tram (any #) and get off at the 3rd stop (in about 7 min). Alternatively, take a bus #70, or minibus #64, 20 and get off at the Art Museum / Khudozestvenny Muzei.

Please make sure you?ve got this direction page printed ? this will save you lots of time.

Cross the Lenin street, to your right there will be a long coral-violet building # 9 with signs 'OPTIKA', walk in its yard, continue walking along the building - our entrance is the second from the left corner of the building. Apartment is on the 3rd floor ! The main entrance door pained in pink and has an outside door phone with a little sign ? please use it as the main metal door is locked.

C) 200 Rub private taxi.

From the airport:

A) a trolley # 4, bus # 20 (takes 20 min)
B) minibuses ## 20, 61, 49, get off at the Art Museum / Khudozestvenny Muzei and walk 5 min backwards.

From the Train station:
1) The distance from the train station to the hostel is 1.5km / 20 minutes by foot. Walk over the bridge and turn to the left road (Chkalova street) right after the bridge. The first street to the right is Cheremhovsky. Among all 2-storey wooden buildings on this street there is only one brick light blue 4-storey block on the Right side. This is the hostel.
2) Take any tram across the bridge and get off at the second stop. Cross the street to the other side and walk in 50 meters between the pizza cafe and building N9. The blue 4-storey building infront of you is the hostel. Trams number 1 and 2 are the most frequent.
3) Take minibus number 16, 116, or 20 and get off at the 1st stop after the bridge called 'Bytovaya'. Walk 30 meters further and turn to the first street on the right. Among all 2-storey wooden buildings on this street there is only one brick light blue 4-storey block on the Right side.

From the Airport:
1) The easiest way to get to the hostel from the airport is to take a taxi. The highest possible taxi price is 300 rubles total.
2) Public transport: take minibus number 20 or 45 and get off at the bus-stop called 'Bytovaya' - the last bus-stop before the bridge. Cheremhosvsky street is right infront of the bus-stop. Cross in to the street. Among 2-storey wooden buildings find the only one brick light blue 4-storey block on the Right side. This is the 5th building on the right from the beginning of the street.

Opposite the train station there is a bus stop. You have to pass the road and take the bus number 12. It goes 10 bus stops and the 11th is 'ZAGS' where you have to take off.

From that bus stop you have to pass the road, walk aside 3 high houses, then go between them, and you will find a small marketplace. Go directly through the marketplace and cross another road. The street you will appear on is Golubyatnikova. To the right side you'll see a high building, address Golubyatnikova 13, behind it is our hostel. In entrance you will see dialing lock. 2. Take a shuttle bus to the metro station Planernaya/????????? (Purple line) or shuttle bus to the ?Rechnoy vokzal/?????? ??????"(Green line) metro station (19 RUR, $0.80, 45 minutes) and go to "Kitai-Gorod/?????-?????" metro station (Purple and Orange line)

From Domodedovo (DME) airport:
Take direct train to Paveletskiy/??????????" train station (cost 200 RUR, 45 minutes, train departs every 30 min), there enter metro station Paveletskaya/??????????" and go to "Kitai-Gorod/?????-?????" metro station.

Get out of Kitai-Gorod and take the Maroseyka/????????? exit from the metro station (in the metro station look at the sign for the direction Maroseyka/?????????).
Walk along the Maroseyka/????????? Street on the left hand side. Go straight. After 5 minutes walking, on the left you will find Devyatkin pereulok/???????? ???????? (there's Alpha Bank/????? ???? in the corner between Devyatkin pereulok/???????? and the main street where you're walking) .

Turn left in Devyatkin pereulok/????????. On the left, after 30 metres, you will find the number 4 (the number is near the door, on the right of it). The door is the one on the left of the arch. On the door, you will see a keypad.

Now you have 2 options:
1) To ring the hostels press the number 6 on the keypad and wait. A person from the hostel will come to open the door.

2) To open the door by you press the number 6 and immediately after press the symbol of the key. On the keypad will appear 3 small lines. Now you should press the numbers 1 9 8 6. The door will open, pull the door and you can go up to the 1st floor. The entrance of the hostel is the door on the right. Ring the number 6 (on the left of the door).

We are located at the Metro Station KITAI GOROD, on the Orange and Purple line.

WALKING DIRECTIONS from the Metro KITAI GOROD
At the metro, station Kitai Gorod platform between the trains, look for the sign that says 'Maroseyka' (in Russian Letters it looks like this 'MAROSENKA'). The sign is in the middle of the platform hanging from the ceiling and is quite small. Follow this sign toward Maroseyka Street and exit the metro station taking the escalators. At the top of the escalators walk through the glass doors and turn RIGHT, here you will enter into an underground passage with many different small shops. Walk all the way to the end of the passage and take the stairs to your left. Now you will be above ground. Walk forward from the stairs 100 meters up Maroseyka Street on the left hand side. Walk past the Old Orange Orthodox Church and take the first left street where you see a perfume shop with a huge plasma TV on it, this street is called Bolshoi Zlatoustinskiy Street. Walk down this street for 20 meters, and then take the next right turning called Maly Zlatoustinskiy Street. Walk for 60 meters down this street and you will see our sign outside Dom 2 (House 2.) Enter the stairs and we are on the 4th Floor. The total walk from the metro is 2 minutes.

SHEREMETYEVO AIRPORT 2 (International Airport)
Take the airport express train (cost 250RUR, 40 minutes, trains depart every 30-60 mins) to Savelovskii Metro station, north of Moscow on the gray line.

You can take the shuttle bus from outside the airport (50RUR, $2, 45 minutes), to the metro station Rechnoy Vokzal, which is the last stop north on the dark green line, or the shuttle bus to Planernaya Metro which is the last stop north on the purple line.

DOMODEDOVO AIRPORT
Take the airport express train (cost 200RUR, 45 minutes, trains depart every 30 mins) to Paveltskaya Metro station, southeast of Moscow on the brown and dark green line.

VNUKOVO AIRPORT

Sheremeytevo Airport 1 and 2 - Domestic flights and International Flights.
You can take the shuttle bus from outside the airport (15RUR, $.50, 30 minutes), to the metro station Rechnoy Vokzal, which is the last stop north on the dark green line, or the shuttle bus to Planernaya Metro which is the last stop north on the purple line.

Domodedovo Airport - Swiss Air / British Airways
Take the airport express train (cost 120RUR, 45 minutes, trains depart every 20 mins) to Paveltskaya Metro station, southeast of Moscow on the brown and dark green line.

Vnukovo Airport ? Germanwings
Minubuses link the airport to Yugo-Zapadanaya Metro station, last stop south on the red line (cost 15RUR, 30 minutes). Alternatively, take the airport express train (cost 120RUR, 45 minutes) to Kievsky train and metro station.

By metro: take a bus 851 from airport, it will deliver you to metro station Rechnoy Vokzal ? it's top green line station, then take metro to station Mayakovskaya (it will take you about 15 minutes)

2. From Domodedovo airport:

a) You can take express train from Domodedovo to metro Paveletskaya. It goes every 30 minutes during the day, ticket price is 120 rubbles for adult, time in the way is about 45 minutes, then you take green line metro to Mayakovskaya (about 10 minutes).

b) You can take bus from airport to metro Domodedovskaya, it goes every 35 minutes or less if there are lot's of people, price is 40 rubbles. Domodedovskaya metro station is on green line, so you just take a train to Mayakovskaya station (about 30 minutes).

If you arrive to Domodedovo airport (DME), upon exiting arrival sector you should pass the whole building of the airport through and exit the door which is previous to last. The very last door is leading to trains, but you do not need them. There is a?parking lot just in front, you can take any bus (50 rub) or minibus (60 rub) to Domodedovskaya metro station. Then you proceed by metro to SOKOL metro station, along the green line, you need not change the line.
If you arrive to Moscow by train from St.Petersburg (Leningradskiy train st.) or Siberia (Yaroslavskiy train st.) you will find Komsomolskaya metro just close. Take a circle line (brown color) and go 3 stops to Belorusskaya, climb stairs in the middle of the platform to change for the green line and go 3 more stops to Sokol.

Sokol Guesthouse and Hostel, named after its nearest Metro station is a small exclusive guesthouse/hostel, at 71 Leningradski Prospect Apt 109, Moscow, Russia. It?s a few stops on the metro from the centre (about 10 minutes) and also links comfortably by trolley bus also.

The area around Sokol is a never sleep area, with shops and restaurants around open 24 hours. (Also far less pricy than the nearby centre) This is an exiting area to be, the hostel itself is quiet, nearby is a park, so it?s all there.

It is as near to a metro station as one can possibly get, literally right next to the station, and in 2009 the metro exit is literally in front of our entrance, about 10 metres.

There are only 8 beds, so you can meet people in a relaxed un-crowded environment. There is space galore, and no bunk beds, single beds only with space unequal elsewhere in Moscow. Because we are so small, we can pay more attention to cleanliness. No mixed dorms.

The apartment is spectacular, it?s a Stalin era building with high ceilings, and the rooms are enormous. The building entrance is clean, and the courtyard is a beautiful place to sit and relax, if you are not relaxing in our common room, and if you want busy, that is a stroll around the corner.

Located right next to Sokol Metro, the metro has two exits (one on either side of Leningradski Prospect) When coming from town take the last carriage, then when you get out of the metro carriage go up the steps in the centre of the station hallway, walk up the stairs and turn left. Once upstairs you are under Leningradski prospect. If you came by last carriage and follow instructions you are going to the Alabyana street side, for those who can read Russian. (The wrong side has some big glass doors leading into a shopping centre, directly after exiting through the Metro turnstiles) If you go to the wrong side of the street, no problem use the overpass and go to the other side, as you will not find the three arches within 156 meters of walking. You need to be on the south side of the road.

Exit the metro (on the correct side) , turn right (same as the direction of the traffic), walk a minute or few until you see the arches (second building as you stroll down Leningradski), walk through the arch, turn right at the end of building about 30 meters, turn right into courtyard and go to the entrance in the centre of the building (Entrance no 4). If you did walk a few hundred meters and did not see the arches, you are on the wrong side.

Take note that the building number on the outside if you can see it is no 71. Thus 71 Leningradski Prospect, apt109.

When arriving at the centre entrance (entrance 4) of the building press 109 and we will buzz you in. There are no indications on the door so keep this number handy.

b) You can take bus from airport to metro Domodedovskaya, it goes every 35 minutes or less if there are lot's of people, price is 40 rubles. Domodedovskaya metro station is on green line, so you just take a train to Mayakovskaya station (about 30 minutes).

Twenty minutes walk from the hostel up to the stream will let you find a water stream flowing from the rock. Its water is used by the habitants because of its clearness.

The hostel Sludyanka is three rooms flat with a balcony on the first floor of the two-storey building. From the balcony there is a beautiful sight to the Hamar-Daban mountain chain covered with dark fur taiga. In the hostel one can find a cheap place to stay. Six visitors can be replaced at three two-storey beds in one and the same time. All the year round there is warm and cold water and visitors can use shower, fridge and kitchen. Fresh linen is included. Here in the hostel one can get information about different trips and organizing of rest. For extra one can make all year round trips, excursions around Sludyanka and Tunka regions, horse-riding. Located amidst Peter?s canals and numerous bridges, we can be found in a quiet street behind Turgenev Square. All our bedrooms are light and spacious allowing for a comfortable nights sleep. We also have a fully equipped kitchen and a lounge/TV room that you can chill out in. We have a huge collection of Russian and foreign music and DVDs. We now also have a high speed internet connection that you can use at any time together with all the essential gadgets that make backpacking that much smoother: skype (very cheap or free calls anywhere world-wide), CD and DVD burner, SD card reader etc. and then a lot of useful items that are available to borrow during your stay: phone chargers, battery rechargers, adapters etc.

Getting here

There are 4 main access points to St. Petersburg.

1. Airport (Pulkovo 1) (For international arrivals).
2. Moskovski train station (?????????? ??????) (For many trains arriving from Moscow and the Baltics).
3. Baltiski train station/ Eurolines bus stop (For buses coming from the Baltics).
4. Ladjzskaja train station (For many trains arriving from Moscow).

Getting to the hostel from the Airport (Pulkovo 1).

Taxis from the airport to the centre are ridiculously overpriced. The minimum is around 1400 roubles (about 50 dollars) for a 25 minute journey. However, if you choose to do this, ask for:

Far cheaper is the marshrutki (small Ford transit vans). They cost between 18 and 30 roubles per person. From the airport, take bus 213 which will take you to Sennaya square (?????? ???????). From Sennaya Square take marshrutka 212, 7 or 19 which all go down Sadovaja street (??????? ?????). Get out at the corner of Lermontovskiy prospekt (????????????? ????????) and Sadovaja Street. Turn left at this junction and after about 50 m; take the first right turning into ulitsa Labutina (????? ????????). Now go right to the end of the street and you?ll see an arch with a number 36 hanging over the top. To the right of the arch is a black-brown door. Key in 34 into the intercom system and we will open the door automatically. Go up two floors to number 34. Getting to the hostel from Moskovski Station

1. Firstly, you could stop a car - any random car on the street and say:

From there it?s a 2 minute walk around the corner (see below directions). This will cost you from 150-200 roubles. You pay at the end but you agree the price from the beginning. Traveling this way does not come without its risks.

2. Else, take minibus (?????????) (well, Ford transit van) number 180 which goes down Nevski prospekt (in a north-westerly direction). It takes a good 20 minutes but it?s cheap ? 25 roubles. You can double check you?re on the right bus by asking for the above square. This bus will stop on Anglisky prospekt. From there, you go straight over the square, straight again (you?re once again on Anglisky prospekt) and then take your first right into Labutina street (????? ????????). You then go to the end of Labutina st. and you?ll see an arch with a number 36 hanging over the top. To the right of the arch is a brown/black door. Baltisky train station is the closest station to the hostel but it has less public transport heading our direction. However if you want to walk:

Getting to the Hostel by Public Transport

If you choose to get to Puppet Theatre Hostel via public transport, then the best way for you is to catch the metro. The metro (i.e. subway/underground) is a cheap and convenient way to travel around the city.

The nearest metro stations to the Hostel are Ploshad Vosstania - red line on the metro map, and Mayakovskaya - green line on your metro map. Please note! it is the same metro station where two lines (red and green) meet and it has two separate exits. So if you are getting to the hostel by metro you will have to get off at one of these two stops.

General Metro Information:
Opening hours: 05.45 am - 00.15 am.

Please note! The access to the stations and interchange connections close at 00.15 am.

Metro stations are marked with a large letter "M"- (not to be confused with McDonalds^?!). The blue color of this letter will help you here.
You can buy a metro token ("jzeton") for only 8 Rubles (single entry fee, for unlimited number of stops), inside of every metro station at a window or booth called "kassa"(?acca).
In the same booth you can purchase a magnetic card with as many trips on it as you want with the time limit up to 3 months. (Tip: use your fingers to specify how many trips you would like to have on the card or ("karta").
St Petersburg has one of the deepest metros in the world - so be prepared for a long escalator ride down. The signs on the platforms will help you to choose the right direction. Unfortunately all signs are still in Cyrillic, so a Russian-English map will be very useful if you are not familiar with Cyrillic Alphabet.

Getting to the Hostel from the International Airport Pulkovo II:

Bus #13 departs from the bus stop on your left from the arrival terminal. The bus will cost you only 6 rubles and will drop you off at Moskovskaya (??????????) metro station. It will be the first bus stop after the roundabout, and has a huge monument in the center.

Alternatively you can catch a shuttle bus at the same bus stop. It will cost you up to 18 Rubles for your fare and an equal additional cost for your backpack. The shuttle bus numbers are ?-13, ?-213.

To make sure you are catching the right shuttle bus ask the driver two key words (Metro Moskovskaya? ) the answer "DA!" means "yes".

This particular metro station can be accessed only via underground passageway marked with a big blue letter "M" above its entrance. When you are inside, choose the train that goes to the city center. If you are not sure what train to take, check the signs and choose the line that has more stops along it. You will need to change trains at Technologichesky Institute stop. It will be the 5th stop from Moskovskaya. Walk across the station hall to catch your next train to Ploshad Vosstania -3rd stop from Technologicheskiy Institute .

Please note! There are two elevators up from Ploshad Vosstania station. The one at the end of the platform will take you to Ploshad Vosstania exit, the one in the middle to Mayakovskaya. Either of them is okay for you! When you are finished with the metro part of your trip follow your street map to the Hostel.

Getting to the Hostel from the Train Stations:
All train stations are at or near metro stations. There are 5 functioning Train Stations in St.Petersburg. (Moskovskiy -located right at Ploshad Vosstanya metro station, Vitebskiy Train Station, Finlandskiy Train Station, Baltiiskiy Train Station and Ladozskiy Train Station.) All train stations with the exception of Ladozskiy Train Station are located on the same metro line with Ploshad Vosstaniya.

Russian airport and station taxis are unregulated and the drivers ask for rates as high as 50 EURO or more to take newly arrived guests to the city center. signboard and take you directly to your apartment.

From Pulkovo Airport you should take local bus to Moskovskaya Metro Station. There you should take metro and go to Sennaya Metro Station (you shouldn't change metro line). Then you will find yourself on Sennaya Plochshad and you should turn right and go till Muchnoy Pereulok along Sadovaya Street.
