What can we do there?

What trekking gear will I need?

The most important is to have a good pair of walking shoes or boots for longer more strenuous walks that give good ankle support. Walking boots are recommended but many people trek the Atlas in trainers during the summer months. Ideally you should have a set of waterproofs (yes, even in summer) and these can be borrowed from the guest house Ouassaggou if required.


Day excursion from Marrakech:

For those wishing to spend a day in the Atlas Mountains and experience the true spirit of the Berber way of life, the guest house Ouassaggou is open to non-residents. A full lunch is provided at the hotel. This day out also lets you take a walk in the mountains or take a mule to a local village. A unique experience and a day you will always remember.

Our price (60 Euros per person) also includes all the transportation to and from the Dar Ouassaggou. Our cars will pick you up at your hotel in Marrakech.

Easily accessible, the Riad Khabia is nestled in the protective shade of the Royal Palace's high outer walls. The neighborhood is thus very peaceful and quiet. In any direction, a leisurely 10 minute walk ends up at any of the numerous historical sites and interesting visiting areas: the infamous Jemaa El Fna square, a U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage site, the Badii Palace ruins, the busy Mellah souk, the highly exotic spice market, the Sa'adien tombs, and the fragrance of the Aguedal gardens...

To cool off from high noon's desert heat, the Riad Khabia's fragrant courtyard always keeps aside a refreshing and shaded corner; a small, clear, deep pool also helps. Whether at sunrise or sunset, the roof-top terrace always offers an expansive view, panning from palm groves lining the foot of the Atlas Mountains, to an intimate view of the Pink City's skyline, a cubist painting's flat mosaic of geometric patterns pierced by the numerous vertical arrows of the mosque's minarets.

3 Rooms and 3 Luxury Suites on 2 upper floors are available. They all open up protectively towards the peace and freshness of the inner courtyard. Each Room and each Suite offers its individual decoration, although all are furnished to show off the spirit and atmosphere of the local culture.

Route A:
Departing from the South East corner of the infamous Jemaa Al Fna square, take the busy pedestrian and shopping street Riad Zitoun El Kdim towards the Badii Palace. On the way, make your way across the Ferblantiers (tinsmiths) square and walk through Bab (gate) Berrima.
Follow Berrima street, which runs along the high outer walls of the Royal Palace. The street is also known as "stork alley"; note the numerous stork nests crowning the top of the walls. They migrate from as far away as central Europe. Just before arriving at the Berrima Mosque with its characteristically curved parking lot, make a left; 2 small consecutive grocery stores with gas canisters displayed signal the entrance of the street.
After a couple of twists in this local pedestrian alley, you will find the Riad Khabia thanks to its massive door flanked by two small palm trees in earthen pots.

Route B:
From the renowned Koutoubia Mosque or the Place de Foucault, drive down Houman El Fetouaki avenue, which is in the continuity of Mohammed VI avenue.
Arriving at the Ferblantiers square, the rest of the way is identical to the above mentioned route.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Two main points are the reference when arriving at la Medina :

Djemaa el-Fna and the Bab Ksour.

During the day, the taxis or cars are not allowed to drive through Djemaa el-Fna square, so they will probably leave your at Bab Ksour, once you are there, just cross the door, and go ahead the street ?Rue Side el Yamani? during aprox. 5 minutes, this is a calm street with not many shops. After a while, the market shops will start, the street will became covered and in a few meters you will be in a cr
