From the Bus Station

We're a 10 minute walk from the bus station in Cork. The bus station is on the river, and if you face the river and look up to your left you'll see the top of Shandon Church (a clock tower with a golden fish on top). We're right next to that church. Walk to your left and cross the first or second bridge and then head up John Redmond Street. It's not labeled but there is a yellow triangular building called the Dominican Centre on the corner and a brown arrow sign pointing up to Shandon. We're right behind the Quality Hotel when you're going up the hill.

From the Train Station

We're a 15 minute walk from the train station in Cork. The first part is easy; just exit the train station and turn left. You'll be walking along MacCurtain? Street for a while and you'll catch a few glimpses of the clock tower of Shandon Church ahead of you. Keep walking straight, and after a set of lights it turns into Coburg Street. The larger Coburg Street curves to the right but there is a smaller street going straight, keep to the straight and narrow! You'll cross a main road and take a few steps up, at the top turn right and we're right behind the Quality Hotel.

Driving from the Dublin Direction

Follow the signs to the City Centre. You'll eventually be driving along a one way street on the river. NEVER CROSS THE RIVER! After the 4th bridge, you'll see a yellow triangular building called the Dominican Centre on a corner, take that street up the hill and you'll see the Quality Hotel. We're right behind that. To get to our parking, turn left before the hotel and go around to the back.

Driving from the Limerick Direction

As you head into Cork you'll see two churches up on the hill on your right. The one with the clock tower is Shandon Church, and we're right next to that. Make sure you're in the right lane by the time you pass the Heineken/Murphy's Brewery, and the river is at the next set of lights. Don't cross the river! Instead, turn right and take an immediate right again at the Dominican Centre. We're right behind the Quality Hotel. To get to our parking, turn left before the hotel and go around to the back.

This house was built in 1845 and has a colourful history attached to it. Dr. James Roche Verling, a native of Cobh lived here for a number of years. He was personal physician to Napoleon Bonaparte on St. Helena from 1818 to 1820. The eminent doctor died in 1858 and is buried in the Old Cemetery.

The Carbery family, renowned for their relief work during the Great Irish Famine, bought the house and lived there until 1914. In 1916 Bellavista House became the property of the diocese of Cloyne and was officially opened by Bishop Robert Browne as the Sacred Heart Noviciate. The Mercy convents, which had been independent since their foundation in 1850, were thus amalgamated under one Noviciate and one Mother General. Father Browne, a nephew of the Bishop, was a first class passenger on the Titanic from Southampton to Queenstown and frequently stayed at Bellavista. Many of his photographs were used by the international media following the tragic sinking of the Titanic.

Around 1931 the Sisters of Mercy moved out of Bellavista and the house was rented out as a private dwelling and divided into an upper (Northern) and lower (Southern) house. In 1978 the Southern House was sold by the diocese to raise money, and in 1979 the Northern House also came on the market.

Both residences remained separate and private dwellings until they were finally bought by the Ward family in 1998. The two houses were rejoined and extended and the beautiful conservatory which now houses the China Sea Restaurant.

Finally in 2001, Kevin Murphy took over Bellavista and turned it into the hotel we have today!. The result of some more exciting renovation is the new Bellavista Hotel & Self Catering Suites, standing proudly overlooking to the beautiful harbour of cobh.
