Beijing City Walls is an exquisite traditional COURTYARD HOUSE, located within an ancient urban town area, which is perhaps the most authentic old town in Beijing. We say that it is authentic, because in front the gate, there is a zigzag alleyway, which is completely different from many areas.
Beijing City Walls is very different from many of the beautiful HUTONGs that are currently being partially remodelled for modern living. The zigzag alleyway in front of the gate still keeps its Original temptation decades back to the great old Peking. No modern transport vehicle can pass through, one can only walk or use a bicycle.
Only 1 minute walk from the gorgeous & traditional alley of Beijing Major Street, it already gives you the most genuine understanding and feelings of HUTONG of the Old Town Beijing. The retired elders, basking and babble chatting under the sunshine; birds, congregating under the gate tower, chirping; Pekinese, tied on the wire pole; rabbits, kept inside the cages; and, also an old Hutong public toilet, which was built 30 years ago.
Quiet alleyway, friendly eyes, warm exchange of greetings within neighbours, a simple and happy life atmosphere, all these are reminding you:
Life Style in Old Town Beijing
Beijing City Walls, the Traditional Courtyard House; Reparation and Renovations have been carried out in full accordance with the traditional taste and modern standard. Inside the courtyard, red lantern, Chinese knots, a 100 m2 comprehensive functional public hall, free wireless Internet access, clean guestrooms, with cooling and heating air-conditions, and also big washrooms that conform to the European and American standards.
Members of our staff have many years of experience in the reception of our international guests, understand the international cultural differences and different habits of living. They can provide many kinds of services.
If you like to, you may also learn to write a few Chinese characters with pen brush, sing one or two sentences of Peking Opera, paste a traditional kite, personally make and taste your own dumpling.
After spending 5 to 10 minutes in the gorgeous & traditional HUTONG(alley) walking, you promptly approach the Forbidden City, the BeiHai? Park ( North Sea Park ), and the HouHai? tourist site; in 3 to 18 minutes Bicycling, you can also reach the Tiananmen Square, WangFuJing? Shopping Centre, The Temple of Heaven (Tian Tan), The Drum-Tower, Lama Temple, and LiuLiChang? (the Antique calligraphy and painting street) . Taking a taxi from the XiDan? Aviation building and the Beijing Railway Station where the regular airport bus is located, it takes you only about 1.5 to 2 Euros. Our hostel is located in one of Peking?s exquisite traditional neighborhoods known as hutongs. As Beijing grows and modernizes many hutongs are being destroyed. However, recently the government has designated certain hutongs to be protected and preserved as historical and cultural spaces. Our hostel is situated within one of these protected areas. Our particular neighborhood was formed in the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368) and has retained its original scale and structure through the Ming and Qing dynasties and up to the present.
Established on the foundations of the original siheyuan (four-in-one courtyard houses), our hostel exemplifies authentic Beijing architecture. Beijing siheyuans embody the traditional Chinese concept of living. If you want to authentically experience the Chinese peoples? life style then staying at our hostel is your best bet. A Chinese poem ponders, ?How deep is a deep courtyard?? Only in the ancient courtyard house can you experience the depth of this poetic feeling.
Our hostel is designed not only to be your home away from home, but also to allow you to touch Chinese culture in a meaningful way. Our furniture, decorations, and overall layout will truly immerse you in Chinese traditional culture. In our teahouse you can experience Chinese tea culture and in our cafe you can enjoy traditional Chinese food. We also provide a self-service kitchen in which you can enjoy the pleasure and convenience of cooking. We can arrange all kinds of outings to Beijing?s main tourist attractions as well as help you explore the Beijing that lies off the beaten track. Additionally, we organize some traditional Chinese activities such as Tai chi here at the hostel. If you stay with us you are guaranteed to genuinely experience the Chinese way of life.
There are many types of rooms in our hostel in which to meet your needs. We offer deluxe double rooms, standard rooms (two single beds), single rooms (one single bed) and 4-bed or 6-bed dorm-style rooms. All our rooms are clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced.
Our hostel enjoys a great location. Since we are situated inside Beijing?s second-ring road a great majority of Beijing?s most famous sites are easily accessible from our hostel. We provide bike rentals so that you can enjoy the hutongs and other Beijing attractions at your own pace. We are happy to supply you with a map with which to explore the traditional hutongs. From our front door it only takes ten minutes to walk to the nearest subway station, Xidan shopping center, Shishahai, and Beihai Park. There are many restaurants and food stalls nearby which allow you to sample different styles of Chinese cuisine. In addition, many banks are conveniently located within walking distance of our hostel.
From our hostel it is also very convenient for you to take airport shuttle bus. It is only a fifteen-minute walk from our hostel to Xidan airport shuttle bus station so it is convenient for you to stay here for shuttle to the airport the next day.
If you want to personally experience the authentic Beijing way of life, our hostel is your best choice. Everything is so convenient and we will make you feel at home!

BEIJING RED LANTERN HOUSE MANAGEMENT
****************************************************************************************************************
...SEVERAL GENERATIONS LIVING UNDER THE SAME ROOF...
IT IS HARD TO PLEASE EVERYBODY BUT MORE THAN SEVEN HUNDRED GUESTS HAVE REVIEWED OUR HOSTEL!!!!!
The best and most charming in-hutong area Chinese Courtyard Hostel in the heart of downtown Beijing... 100% traditional and unique. This business is actually the first courtyard hostel open to travelers in Beijing, not newly built copies... We like to call it 'a slice of heaven everybody can afford'
See and experience the real core life of Beijing and stay in our Beijing traditional courtyard house within your budget. In the sense of home, Red lantern House is the closest while you are traveling.
Behind the busy streets of Central Beijing, Red Lantern House is quietly located in the best part of the largest preserved Hutong area of downtown Beijing, which used to be the homes of royal and noble families. The main building was built in the eighteenth century in a traditional courtyard house attached to the famous Zhengjue Temple. This hostel aims to give it?s guests an opportunity to experience Chinese architecture and culture with local style by actually staying with a local family who provides guests with affordable private and shared rooms of many types and styles.
To meet increasing demand of more and more international guests of different requirements, two more locations have been put into operation and the fourth is under renovation which will be fully ready for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Red Lantern House now consists of the Main Building, West Yard, East Yard and Temple Court. They are all located in the same neighborhood and main street. More choices of different accommodation are available to suit your needs and tastes. No matter you are traveling on your own, as couples, whole family, as a group, the old or young, and even disabled (we have a handicap-accessible location), you will surely enjoy yourselves comfortably in a new home.
This hostel actually is a restored heritage home but features all the comforts of a modern home with the ambiance and feeling of traditional Chinese decor.
We have excellent facilities and our services are of more than a hostel standard. The uniqueness of our hostel is never easily found even you are staying in a five star hotel. This is why within a very short period it has become widely accepted as one of the best hostels and gained excellent reputation among guests from all over the world.
The hostel is a family-owned facility offering all her guests a warm personal welcome and detailed services in a relaxed atmosphere of peace and tranquility where you won't feel isolated.
As one of our guests put: 'This is an excellent hostel with restaurant facilities and very good food from early morning till late at night. The location in a small Hutong gives it great atmosphere and the local family feel with several generations, a cat, a dog and a small happy baby all living under the same roof adds up to this being one of the greatest hostels you will ever stay at.'
Our staff is friendly and can speak English, always ready for help. All our lovely bedrooms are clean and of a fantastic value.
Again as another guests wrote in his review of our hostel: 'The character is outstanding and charming. When you first pull up you may be a bit confused because the area doesn't look the best. However, you soon realize this cute little place is in the center of a real old Beijing downtown. The rooms open up to a courtyard/restaurant where everyone goes to meet one another. It is filled with many travelers from all over the world (in their 20s and 30s, even 40s) that you get to know over beers and food.'

Below are some comments from our guests:
*** I want to thank the Beijing Far East International Youth Hostel for perfect lodging during my 6-day stay in Beijing! The hostel, its staff and the day trips and activities it organized were great, and the location and atmosphere second to none! Once again thanks a lot
*** This is a great 'hostel', more of a hotel really. Rooms are cleaned every day and it has every service you could need - internet, laundry and a tour office which can organize your trips to the Great Wall etc. The location is perfect - in the middle of the old part of Beijing. We spent the first few nights here in another part of town and this area is much safer and more fun, I'd recommend it to anyone visiting Beijing for the first time.
***The entire staff at Far East is so incredibly helpful! Having a tourist office inside the hostel was definitely useful, and they're really good at explaining how to get around the city. It's within walking distance to both Tianamen Sq. and the Forbidden City, and the shops along the alleyways are so much cheaper than the silk market! We found that out a little too late. The restaurant on the first floor is really good, and the cafe at the bottom floor is also really convenient. Make sure you stay in the main hostel, not in the court yard!
*** Fantastic travel desk and massage facilities - staff very friendly. Great free internet service and good breakfast buffet - constantly restocked. Great!
***The great food and excellent internet facilities provided by the hotel make life very comfortable and with only a 10 minute walk to the nearest underground station, or a 20 min walk through some very interesting streets leading to Tiananmen Square, the location is quite central. I've stayed in this Hotel 3 times now and will definitely stay there again.
***Absolutely fantastic! Extremely nice people, very helpful, good tours and EXCELLENT massages! Loved it and would definitely stay there again. Just one thing: it would be nice with a few strictly female/male rooms. But apart from that it was all more than good!
*** Better location - it's impossible! Nothing better than being in this fantastic Hutong. In front of the hostel, there's a fantastic bar-cafe, where you can eat for a reasonable price. I would return!
*** It's very clean (we had an en-suite) and the food offered at both the restaurant and cafe were excellent in taste and value for money. Free internet was great. Within walking distance to Forbidden City.
